El reptil marino más grande del mundo – nivel 3

Los investigadores han identificado un fósil de mandíbula descubierto por una niña británica y su padre en una playa de Somerset (Inglaterra). Pertenece a un gigantesco reptil marino de hace 202 millones de años. Se calcula que el Ichthyotitan severnensis medía entre 22 y 26 metros de largo, lo que lo convierte en uno de los reptiles marinos más grandes jamás conocidos. El fósil es de un ictiosaurio, un tipo de reptil marino que prosperó durante el Periodo Triásico. Este descubrimiento, junto con otra mandíbula hallada en 2016, confirma la existencia de una nueva especie hasta ahora desconocida para la ciencia.
Estos hallazgos arrojan luz sobre la notable diversidad y tamaño de los reptiles marinos durante el Periodo Triásico y sugieren que coexistieron con los dinosaurios y podrían haber sobrevivido hasta un acontecimiento de extinción global hace unos 201 millones de años.
