La maratoniana olímpica Rebecca Cheptegei ha fallecido trágicamente tras ser agredida por su ex novio.
La atleta ugandesa de 33 años, que compitió en los Juegos Olímpicos de París, sufrió quemaduras graves tras ser rociada con gasolina y prendida fuego en Kenia. Murió cuatro días después debido a un fallo orgánico causado por las quemaduras que cubrían más del 70% de su cuerpo. El ataque se produjo cuando volvía de la iglesia con sus dos hijas. Su ex novio, que también sufrió quemaduras, está ingresado en la UCI. Las autoridades están investigando el incidente, que suscita preocupación por el aumento de la violencia contra las atletas, especialmente en Kenia. Cheptegei empezó a competir en 2010, representando a Uganda en diversas competiciones. Ganó una medalla de oro en una prueba de carreras de montaña en 2022 y vivía y se entrenaba en Kenia, región famosa por producir atletas de élite. Su muerte ha conmocionado a la comunidad atlética, que la recuerda como una persona amable y con talento.
