Una explosión hidrotermal en el Parque Nacional de Yellowstone sorprendió a los visitantes y les hizo correr para ponerse a salvo mientras el vapor, la roca y la suciedad salían disparados hacia el cielo.
La explosión se debió posiblemente a minerales que obstruían una tubería subterránea. No hubo heridos, pero la explosión dañó un paseo marítimo de la zona de Biscuit Basin. Los vídeos del suceso muestran agua y escombros lloviendo sobre el parque. Las explosiones hidrotermales son algo habitual en Yellowstone. Se producen cuando el agua subterránea se convierte en vapor. Se produjeron erupciones similares en Biscuit Basin en 1959, 1991 y 2009. Predecir estos sucesos es difícil, ya que pueden ocurrir instantáneamente. El Servicio de Parques investigará si la explosión alteró el sistema subterráneo midiendo la composición química y la temperatura de los géiseres y respiraderos cercanos. A pesar de la explosión, no se han detectado cambios en el sistema volcánico, y el parque se mantiene en niveles normales de actividad.
