El Reino Unido decidió devolver las islas Chagos a Mauricio tras controlarlas durante más de 50 años. Estas islas están en el océano Índico, y una de ellas, Diego García, es importante porque Estados Unidos la utiliza como base militar.
El Reino Unido conservó las islas después de que Mauricio se independizara en 1968 e incluso obligó a la población a abandonarlas para construir la base. Las Naciones Unidas y otros grupos internacionales querían que el Reino Unido devolviera las islas, y la presión sobre el Reino Unido aumentó aún más tras el Brexit.
El acuerdo permite a Estados Unidos utilizar la base durante 99 años más. Las personas que tuvieron que abandonar las islas ahora podrán regresar, pero las condiciones de vida en las islas son difíciles.
