Los científicos observan fuertes auroras boreales en muchos estados de EE.UU. y explican que las luces proceden de tormentas solares.

Estas tormentas se inician cuando el sol envía material caliente y energía magnética. Las tormentas se desplazan por el espacio, llegan a la Tierra y sacuden nuestro campo magnético. Esta energía crea las auroras boreales y australes.

Las tormentas también causan problemas a las redes eléctricas porque crean corrientes eléctricas. Los satélites en órbita baja se enfrentan a una mayor resistencia, por lo que los controladores utilizan más combustible para mantenerlos a la altura adecuada.

Los cohetes y el GPS también tienen problemas. El GPS, muy preciso, se vuelve menos correcto durante las tormentas fuertes. Por todo ello, los expertos hablan todo el día con las personas que dirigen sistemas importantes e intentan mantener todo a salvo.
