La llama olímpica comenzó su viaje en Roma. En un gran estadio, el presidente del país encendió el fuego principal y habló sobre la paz. La llama recorrerá Italia y llegará a Milán antes de los Juegos de Invierno.
Muchos atletas famosos participaron en el primer día del recorrido. Un nadador entregó la antorcha a otros dos atletas. Más tarde, un jugador de baloncesto con una grave enfermedad sostuvo la antorcha, y la multitud mostró fuertes sentimientos cuando salió del estadio.
Después, dirigentes de distintos grupos deportivos sostuvieron la antorcha en la carretera que atraviesa Roma. Un jugador de tenis también saludó a la multitud en una plaza de la ciudad. Por la tarde, otro jugador de baloncesto cogió la llama cerca de un conocido castillo. A continuación, la gira recorrerá toda Italia durante 63 días.
