El Festival de Cine de Cannes se inauguró no sólo con estrellas y glamour, sino también centrándose en Gaza.
La actriz francesa Juliette Binoche rindió homenaje a Fátima Hassouna, joven fotoperiodista palestina que murió en un ataque aéreo israelí el mes pasado. Fátima aparecía en un documental proyectado en el festival. Su muerte, justo un día después de conocer la proyección de la película, conmovió profundamente a mucha gente. Muchos actores y cineastas firmaron una carta abierta pidiendo el fin de la violencia en Gaza. Algunos también cuestionaron a Juliette Binoche por no haberla firmado. Durante su discurso, dijo que el arte sigue vivo incluso cuando las personas ya no están y que cuenta nuestras historias y sueños.
Los organizadores del festival suelen intentar evitar la política, pero la actual situación mundial lo hizo imposible. El festival también mostró su apoyo a Ucrania proyectando documentales. También compiten películas de otros países, como Irán, Japón y Estados Unidos, con lo que Cannes sigue siendo un acontecimiento verdaderamente internacional.
