La recogida del corcho en Portugal es un trabajo cualificado. Trabajadores como Carlos Feras lo hacen cada verano. Pelan cuidadosamente la corteza de los alcornoques sin herirlos. La corteza vuelve a crecer lentamente, y los agricultores sólo pueden cosecharla cada nueve años. Portugal es el mayor productor de corcho del mundo y su cultivo es muy importante para la economía local. El corcho es muy demandado porque es bueno para el medio ambiente.
Antonio José Matos empezó a recoger corcho hace 43 años. Dice que el trabajo es duro pero gratificante. La gente utiliza el corcho para muchas cosas, desde tapones de vino hasta aislantes. Los investigadores están estudiando el corcho como alternativa ecológica a otros materiales. La industria necesita más trabajadores, pero cada vez hay menos gente que quiera hacer este trabajo.
