En Portugal, trabajadores como Carlos Feras recogen corcho de los árboles todos los veranos. Pelan la corteza sin herir a los árboles. La corteza de los alcornoques vuelve a crecer lentamente. Los agricultores sólo pueden recoger corcho cada nueve años. Portugal produce más corcho que ningún otro país. El cultivo del corcho es muy importante para el país. Hoy en día la gente quiere más corcho porque es un material natural.
Antonio José Matos cosecha corcho durante 43 años. Dice que el trabajo es duro. Pero le gusta mucho. La gente utiliza el corcho para muchas cosas, como tapones de vino y aislamiento. Los investigadores están encontrando nuevas formas de utilizar el corcho. La industria necesita más trabajadores, pero no hay mucha gente que quiera hacer este trabajo. Los alcornoques crecen lentamente, así que este trabajo requiere paciencia.
