Desde el siglo XIX, los científicos pensaban en construir un ascensor espacial.
Llegar al espacio no es nada barato, porque los cohetes tienen que llevar mucho combustible para poder siquiera salir de la Tierra. Por lo tanto, llegar a la Luna o a Marte cuesta millones de dólares. Con un ascensor espacial, ir al espacio sería mucho más barato.
El problema es que no se dispone de las tecnologías y los materiales adecuados para construir un ascensor de este tipo. A los expertos se les ocurrió la idea de utilizar nanotubos de carbono. Este material es más resistente que cualquier otro, pero aunque fuera posible construir el ascensor, los pequeños objetos que orbitan alrededor de la Tierra probablemente lo dañarían.
