Investigadores australianos descubrieron que las grandes serpientes oliváceas seguían a los buceadores en la Gran Barrera de Coral. Probablemente, las serpientes pensaban que los buceadores eran otras serpientes.

Era la época de reproducción de las serpientes y se volvieron muy activas. Se acercaban a los buceadores, se enroscaban alrededor de sus aletas, atacaban sus cámaras y hacían movimientos graciosos. Las serpientes podían atacar a los buceadores en cualquier momento, lo que era muy peligroso porque las grandes serpientes oliváceas eran venenosas.

La serpiente de mar oliva es la serpiente más común del mar al norte de Australia, y puede medir más de dos metros. Como otras serpientes, respira aire, pero sólo vive en el mar.
