En Eslovaquia, los médicos esterilizaron a muchas mujeres romaníes en la década de 1990 y principios de la de 2000, pero las mujeres no lo sabían. Esto ocurría a menudo justo después del parto.
En la cultura romaní, tener muchos hijos es muy importante, por lo que estas mujeres perdieron algo fundamental en sus vidas. Algunas mujeres descubrieron la verdad años después, cuando intentaron tener más hijos. Muchas también se enfrentaron a la vergüenza, la tristeza y los problemas en sus familias.
Las víctimas y las activistas piden ahora una indemnización. Su grupo en Košice ayuda a las mujeres a recopilar historiales médicos, que son la prueba de lo ocurrido. Más de 140 mujeres de dos zonas se vieron afectadas. El gobierno eslovaco pidió perdón y puede que pague indemnizaciones, pero el pueblo eslovaco tiene opiniones diferentes. Muchas mujeres romaníes aún esperan que se haga justicia.
