La Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano lleva cinco años intentando reducir el riesgo de conmoción cerebral, y recientemente ha llegado a un acuerdo legal de casi mil millones de dólares con ex jugadores que sufren traumatismos craneoencefálicos, depresión, pérdida de memoria y cambios de humor.
El presidente de la Comisión Asesora de Salud y Seguridad de la NFL cree que los cascos podrían prohibirse en el futuro, ya que, según los expertos, dan a los jugadores una falsa sensación de seguridad. En los últimos años, algunos médicos y exjugadores han planteado la prohibición de los cascos para que la cabeza humana no pueda utilizarse como arma. Pero no se ha tomado realmente en serio.
Por otra parte, algunas personas también han sugerido que habría colisiones inevitablemente fortuitas, en las que fracturarse el cráneo o la cara es una preocupación realista.
