Los estadounidenses celebran el 19 de junio de cada año. Se convirtió en fiesta federal estadounidense en 2021, gracias al presidente Joe Biden.
El día recuerda la libertad de los estadounidenses negros esclavizados. Comenzó en el Sur, pero se hizo más conocido tras las protestas de 2020, cuando la policía mató a George Floyd y a otras personas. La gente celebra Juneteenth con marchas y fiestas. En algunos estados todavía no se celebra esta fiesta porque no hay ninguna ley que la regule. Juneteenth también nos recuerda los problemas raciales en EEUU.
Juneteenth combina las palabras June (junio) y 19th (19). En este día de 1865, un general dijo a los esclavos de Galveston, Texas, que eran libres. Ocurrió años después de la Proclamación de Emancipación del presidente Lincoln. Texas lo convirtió en día festivo en 1980. Ahora es festivo en al menos 28 estados y en Washington DC.
