El Observatorio Subterráneo de Neutrinos de Jiangmen (JUNO), en China, comenzará pronto un gran experimento para estudiar los neutrinos.
Los neutrinos son partículas muy pequeñas creadas por reacciones nucleares. Pueden atravesar cosas como el cuerpo humano sin ningún efecto. JUNO estudiará cómo cambian estas partículas y lo que eso puede decirnos sobre el universo. JUNO está situado bajo tierra y cuesta 300 millones de dólares. Obtendrá datos de las centrales nucleares cercanas y también podrá estudiar las partículas procedentes del Sol y de la Tierra.
El proyecto comenzará en 2025 y ayudará a los científicos a comprender cómo se mueven las placas de la Tierra. Un proyecto estadounidense similar, llamado DUNE, está sufriendo retrasos por problemas de dinero. JUNO puede convertirse en el líder mundial en este importante campo de investigación.
