El presidente Joe Biden pidió disculpas por el papel de Estados Unidos en los internados indios. Estas escuelas existieron desde 1819 hasta 1969, y el gobierno ayudó a dirigirlas.
El gobierno estadounidense obligó a los niños indígenas a vivir en estas escuelas, donde tenían que abandonar a sus familias, no podían hablar sus lenguas ni mostrar sus culturas. Casi 1.000 niños indígenas murieron en estas escuelas, pero la cifra real podría ser mucho mayor.
Deb Haaland, la primera secretaria de Interior indígena de Estados Unidos, afirmó que estas escuelas causaron mucho sufrimiento. India acogió con satisfacción las disculpas, pero afirmó que la gente necesitaba saber más sobre estos hechos y comprender cómo perjudicaron a las comunidades indígenas.
