El gobierno británico prohíbe el uso de taxis para llevar a los solicitantes de asilo a la mayoría de las citas médicas a partir de febrero.
Esta decisión se tomó después de que una investigación de la BBC descubriera que algunas personas hacían viajes en taxi muy largos y caros; por ejemplo, un viaje costaba 600 libras. El gobierno inició una revisión y reveló que sus gastos de transporte para los solicitantes de asilo ascienden a unos 15,8 millones de libras al año. Es decir, más de 18 millones de euros.
Los ministros quieren ahora que los solicitantes de asilo utilicen el transporte público para las citas rutinarias, a fin de ahorrar dinero. Hay excepciones para las personas discapacitadas o embarazadas. Aunque el gobierno espera reducir el despilfarro, el número de solicitantes de asilo que se alojan en hoteles sigue aumentando, lo que sugiere que la factura total del transporte también puede estar aumentando.
