Estas tormentas comienzan con enormes erupciones de material caliente y campos magnéticos procedentes de la atmósfera solar. Cuando viajan por el espacio y llegan a la Tierra, perturban nuestro campo magnético y le añaden grandes cantidades de energía. Esta perturbación produce las auroras boreales y australes, pero también crea problemas para la tecnología moderna.

Las tormentas solares aceleran las partículas cargadas hacia la atmósfera terrestre, provocando fuertes corrientes eléctricas en las redes eléctricas. Estos fenómenos también pueden interferir con los satélites. Los controladores trabajan a menudo durante la noche para mantener los satélites de órbita baja a la altitud correcta, a veces quemando combustible extra para evitar que caigan hacia la Tierra.
