Los venezolanos participaron en un referéndum apoyado por el presidente Nicolás Maduro, en el que se abordó una disputa fronteriza con Guyana.
La disputa consiste en una pregunta sobre el rechazo de la jurisdicción de la Corte Internacional de Justicia (CIJ) sobre el territorio en torno al río Essequibo, una tierra potencialmente rica en petróleo. El referéndum pretende medir el apoyo al gobierno de Maduro antes de las elecciones presidenciales de 2024. A pesar de la petición de Guyana de detener el referéndum, la CIJ dictaminó sin prohibirlo e instó a ambas partes a evitar acciones que agravaran la disputa. Maduro emitió su voto y alentó su aprobación.
Los analistas políticos creen que Maduro está utilizando el referéndum para probar su fuerza electoral, esperando que se apruebe debido a la falta de campaña de la oposición. Los votantes expresaron su esperanza de recuperar el territorio en disputa.
