Oliver Chu, de tres años, es la primera persona del mundo que recibe una nueva terapia génica para una enfermedad hereditaria llamada síndrome de Hunter.
Esta enfermedad causa daños en el cuerpo y el cerebro, y los pacientes con los peores casos no suelen vivir más allá de la adolescencia.
Un gen defectuoso impide que el organismo produzca una enzima importante. Científicos de Manchester (Reino Unido) tomaron las células madre de Oliver y utilizaron un virus para introducir en ellas una copia correcta del gen. Estas células empezaron a fabricar la enzima que faltaba en el cuerpo de Oliver, e impidieron que su cerebro y su cuerpo sufrieran más daños.
Un año después, los médicos y la familia de Oliver están entusiasmados con sus progresos. Crece con normalidad, puede hablar con normalidad y aprende cosas nuevas. Sus padres esperan que su hermano mayor, Skylar, que también tiene el síndrome de Hunter, pueda recibir pronto la misma terapia.
