Los incendios forestales han asolado nueve países de la región mediterránea, causando la muerte de al menos 40 personas, siendo Argelia el país más afectado.
La región montañosa del norte de Argelia registró 34 víctimas mortales, mientras que la vecina Túnez también luchó contra los incendios forestales. Italia sufrió numerosos incendios forestales en Sicilia y Calabria durante una fuerte ola de calor, que causaron dos muertos. Los bomberos de Turquía, Croacia, Siria, Gran Canaria y Portugal también lucharon contra los incendios que se propagaban.
La científica Izidine Pinto subrayó que la frecuencia e intensidad crecientes de estos incendios forestales están directamente relacionadas con la emergencia climática inducida por el hombre.
