Investigadores de la Universidad Flinders de Australia han descubierto que los nuevos trajes de neopreno resistentes a las mordeduras de tiburón pueden reducir significativamente las lesiones durante los ataques de tiburón.
Estos trajes están fabricados con materiales que contienen fibras resistentes como el Kevlar y el polietileno, que ayudan a proteger contra los cortes profundos y la pérdida de sangre. Aunque los trajes no pueden evitar por completo las lesiones internas, pueden reducir el número y la gravedad de las heridas, dando a las víctimas más tiempo para recibir ayuda de emergencia. Se hicieron pruebas con tiburones blancos y tigres, y los resultados mostraron que estos nuevos materiales funcionaban mucho mejor que el neopreno normal. A los investigadores les sorprendió lo mucho que se redujeron los daños. Los ataques de tiburón son raros, pero pueden ser mortales, por lo que cualquier mejora en la protección es importante.
Los trajes tradicionales de cota de malla utilizados para bucear son demasiado pesados e inflexibles para los surfistas, por lo que el objetivo ahora es hacer estos nuevos materiales más flexibles, manteniendo al mismo tiempo la resistencia suficiente para salvar vidas.
