En 1939, un profesor de la Universidad de Columbia se reunió con profesores, ingenieros y otros expertos. Redactaron un documento de 42 páginas sobre los autobuses escolares. Los expertos recomendaron que los autobuses escolares fueran amarillos porque las letras negras sobre amarillo se veían fácilmente. Además, los autobuses amarillos eran más visibles con mal tiempo.
El color amarillo obtuvo su propio nombre, y aunque ninguna ley dice que los autobuses escolares deban ser amarillos, la mayoría de los 480.000 autobuses escolares de EEUU son amarillos.
