La reina Margarita II de Dinamarca ha anunciado inesperadamente su abdicación tras 52 años en el trono.
En su discurso de Año Nuevo, reveló que el 14 de enero de 2024, aniversario de su ascensión al trono, dejará el trono a su hijo, el príncipe heredero Federico. La reina, que conservará el título de Su Majestad, citó como factor determinante de su decisión los problemas de salud derivados de una operación de espalda a la que se sometió en febrero. La primera ministra danesa, Mette Frederiksen, expresó su gratitud por la dedicación de toda la vida de la reina y anunció que el príncipe heredero Frederik y la princesa heredera Mary ascenderán al trono como nueva pareja real.
