Tulum, México, se hizo popular entre los nómadas digitales durante la pandemia. Sus hermosas playas y su estilo de vida relajado provocaron un gran boom inmobiliario.

Mucha gente esperaba comprar condominios y vivir o invertir en el paraíso. Sin embargo, algunos compradores dicen ahora que fueron engañados. Los promotores prometían casas terminadas, pero a menudo sólo desbrozaban el terreno o construían edificios a medio terminar. En algunos casos, los compradores pagaron hasta el 90% del precio y acabaron sin nada.

Un promotor, Akela Development Group, estaba detrás de varios proyectos. De seis edificios prometidos, sólo se terminó uno. Algunos de los promotores desaparecieron, uno fue encontrado muerto y otro se quitó la vida.

Muchos compradores perdieron sus ahorros. Algunos intentaron emprender acciones legales, pero ha sido difícil. Las leyes locales son confusas y es posible que algunos terrenos no pertenecieran legalmente a los vendedores. Aunque la gente sigue soñando con vivir en Tulum, ahora muchos sólo compran casas totalmente construidas.
