En 1848, el obrero de la construcción Phineas Gage sobrevivió a un grave accidente cuando una barra de hierro le destrozó la parte frontal del cerebro. Aunque no murió, su personalidad cambió por completo; el hombre organizado se volvió grosero y poco fiable.
Este caso fue muy importante porque demostró que el cerebro y la personalidad están conectados a áreas específicas. Más tarde, Gage encontró trabajo conduciendo una diligencia en Chile. Este trabajo difícil y repetitivo fue como una terapia, pues obligó a su cerebro a adaptarse y cambiar.
La recuperación de Gage demostró a los médicos que el cerebro es flexible, y su supervivencia inició el campo de la neurociencia. Ahora sabemos que el cerebro puede adaptarse y recuperarse de lesiones graves, lo que da esperanzas a los pacientes de hoy.
