Italia tiene la población más envejecida de la Unión Europea. Una de cada cuatro personas tiene más de 65 años.
No es de extrañar que Italia cuente con la velocista de 90 años más rápida del mundo, Emma Maria Mazzenga. Mazzenga nació el 1 de agosto de 1933. Estableció un nuevo récord mundial al correr 200 metros en 51,47 segundos. Posee cinco récords del mundo y muchos récords europeos e italianos en la categoría Masters sprint, que es para corredores de más edad. Mazzenga estaba contenta y sorprendida por su último récord. Suele correr sin rivales en su grupo de edad y se centra en conseguir buenos tiempos.
Mazzenga volvió a correr a los 53 años y le resulta reconfortante y social. Competirá en los campeonatos italianos en junio y espera participar en los campeonatos del mundo en Suecia el año que viene. Pero bromea con no hacer muchos planes.
