En 1972, durante la misión Apolo 17, los astronautas recogieron rocas y suelo lunares.
Recientemente, los científicos han estudiado los cristales de una roca recogida por el astronauta Harrison Schmitt. Estos cristales se llaman circón y nos ayudan a conocer la edad de la Luna y cómo se formó. Descubrieron que la Luna es unos 40 millones de años más antigua de lo que pensábamos. Se formó hace más de 4.460 millones de años. La Luna se formó probablemente cuando un gran objeto, como Marte, chocó con la Tierra hace mucho tiempo. Esta colisión envió rocas calientes al espacio, que más tarde se convirtieron en la Luna.
Los científicos utilizaron un método especial para confirmar la edad del circón. Comprender la edad de la Luna es importante porque desempeña un papel en la estabilización de la Tierra y la hace apta para la vida. La Luna también influye en el clima de nuestro planeta y es una fuente de inspiración para las personas.
