Books Unbanned comenzó en la Biblioteca Pública de Brooklyn para ayudar con la censura de libros en algunas zonas de Estados Unidos.
Ahora, los jóvenes menores de 18 años de todo el país pueden utilizar los libros de la biblioteca por Internet. A otras cuatro bibliotecas, incluida una de Seattle, les gustó la idea e hicieron lo mismo. Las bibliotecas descubrieron que algunos niños querían carnés de biblioteca porque no tenían una biblioteca cerca. Otros querían libros que estaban prohibidos en su zona.
Cuando las bibliotecas preguntaron por qué los niños querían carnés de biblioteca, obtuvieron muchas respuestas. Vieron lo que pensaban los jóvenes sobre la censura de libros y sobre no tener una biblioteca cerca.
