Los cangrejos ermitaños de todo el mundo están haciendo algo nuevo: eligen caparazones de plástico en lugar de naturales.
Los científicos lo descubrieron mirando fotos en Internet. Vieron 386 cangrejos que utilizaban caparazones de plástico como caparazón. Diez de los dieciséis tipos de estos cangrejos de lugares tropicales están haciendo esto. Los cangrejos podrían elegir caparazones de plástico por varias razones, como presumir para encontrar pareja o porque el plástico es más ligero. Los científicos tienen que comprobar cómo puede cambiar esto en los cangrejos ermitaños a lo largo del tiempo.
Un fotógrafo llamado Shawn Miller tomó muchas fotos de estos cangrejos y quiso protegerlos. Dice que la gente no debería llevarse las conchas de las playas. El plástico es un gran problema para los animales. Según un informe de 2022, los residuos plásticos podrían casi triplicarse de aquí a 2060.
