El aspartamo es un edulcorante artificial común que las empresas utilizan en lugar del azúcar. Lo utilizan en muchos productos, por ejemplo, refrescos o chicles.
La Agencia Internacional para la Investigación del Cáncer (IARC) está considerando declarar el aspartamo sustancia causante de cáncer. La IARC trabaja con pruebas, pero las normas de seguridad sobre cuánto aspartamo puede comer la gente proceden de otra organización. Los dictámenes anteriores de la IARC preocuparon a la gente e hicieron que las empresas cambiaran las recetas de algunos productos.
La Organización Mundial de la Salud también está revisando el aspartamo, que antes consideraba seguro si la gente mantenía unos límites diarios. A los productores les preocupa que hacer funcionar ambos procesos confunda a la gente. Si el IARC dice que el aspartamo puede causar cáncer, empezarán grandes debates.
