En el Amazonas, algunas personas excavan en busca de oro. Esta extracción de oro utiliza mercurio, una sustancia química peligrosa. Esta actividad es contraria a las normas.
El mercurio llega a los ríos y a los peces. La gente se come el pescado. El mercurio entra en el cuerpo de las mujeres. Esto puede enfermar a los bebés. Algunos bebés no pueden mover la cabeza o tienen problemas musculares. Los científicos lo están estudiando. Comprueban si hay mercurio en las madres y los bebés. Esperan averiguar si la extracción de oro enferma a los bebés.
Aunque se deje de extraer, el mercurio permanece en los ríos durante muchos años. Los habitantes de estas comunidades están preocupados por sus hijos y su alimentación.
