Alpacas en Gales – nivel 3

Varias alpacas han hecho de una granja del oeste de Gales su hogar, y podrían estar desempeñando un papel muy importante en la ganadería ovina galesa.
Las nativas peruanas están siendo estudiadas por científicos de la Universidad de Aberystwyth. Mantener a las alpacas junto a las ovejas no sólo es bueno para proteger al rebaño de 12 ovejas detectando depredadores como los zorros, sino que también tiene beneficios medioambientales. Sus hábitos alimentarios están resultando beneficiosos para la tierra porque se comen especies invasoras como la hierba del páramo púrpura, que deja hierba de mejor calidad para las ovejas.
Los científicos creen que controlar los hábitos alimentarios de los animales puede ayudar a restaurar las turberas del País de Gales, que son muy importantes para capturar carbono. No piensan sustituir a las ovejas por alpacas, sino que buscan formas de que estos animales se beneficien mutuamente.
