Científicos europeos están probando un nuevo fertilizante a partir de algas.
Las algas crecen en el agua sucia de las fábricas de leche. Se alimentan de los residuos y luego se convierten en polvo. Este polvo tiene nitrógeno, que ayuda a crecer a las plantas. Cuando los agricultores lo mezclan con el abono normal, utilizan un 25% menos de abono mineral, pero siguen obteniendo buenas cosechas.
El abono de algas funciona lentamente, por lo que los agricultores deben planificarlo mejor. Pero es fácil de transportar y bueno para lugares donde no se pueden utilizar aguas residuales.
En España, los trabajadores de una gran planta de agua de Ourense extraen el nitrógeno y el fósforo del agua sucia. Lo convierten en abono para las granjas. Estas ideas ayudan a la naturaleza, ahorran energía y hacen que Europa dependa menos de otros países.
