Oliver Chu, de tres años, es la primera persona que recibe terapia génica. Tiene una enfermedad llamada síndrome de Hunter. Esta enfermedad hace que el cuerpo y el cerebro del niño enfermen lentamente.

Las personas con la forma mala del síndrome de Hunter suelen morir cuando son adolescentes. Un gen defectuoso impide que el cuerpo produzca una enzima especial. Los médicos del Reino Unido tomaron las células de Oliver y le pusieron una copia buena del gen. Este gen bueno dice a las células que produzcan la enzima.

Ahora Oliver está muy bien. Aprende y habla mucho mejor. No necesita otros medicamentos. Los médicos y los padres están muy contentos. El hermano mayor de Oliver, Skylar, también tiene el síndrome de Hunter. Los padres quieren la misma terapia para él.
