Brazil’s ex-president goes to prison – level 2

A top court sent Brazil’s ex-president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison. Judges said he tried to plan a military coup after losing the 2022 election.

Four of the five judges voted that he was guilty. They said Bolsonaro wanted to end democracy and bring back dictatorship. His supporters attacked government buildings in January 2023, and several of his supporters also went to court. Only one judge said that there was not enough information to show that Bolsonaro did something wrong.

Many Brazilians celebrated, but Bolsonaro’s supporters said the trial was unfair. Some US politicians, including Donald Trump, also criticized the court. Experts say Bolsonaro’s political movement is still strong, and some people may try to win power again or ask for amnesty.
