El Premio Nobel de Medicina 2024 ha recaído en los investigadores estadounidenses Victor Ambros y Gary Ruvkun. Ganaron casi un millón de euros por descubrir el microARN, una molécula diminuta que ayuda a controlar el funcionamiento de los genes.
Esta investigación es importante porque ayuda a explicar cómo diferentes células, como los músculos, las neuronas y las células cardiacas, se desarrollan a partir del mismo ADN. Al principio, los científicos descubrieron el microARN en los gusanos, pero más tarde se enteraron de que también es importante en los seres humanos.
El premio es para ciencia básica, por lo que no hay usos claros en medicina por ahora. El descubrimiento ayuda a los científicos a comprender mejor cómo los genes se convierten en proteínas, lo que puede ser útil en el futuro.
