Un helecho de Nueva Caledonia tiene el genoma más grande de cualquier ser vivo. El genoma, o todo su ADN, mide 100 metros de largo cuando lo estiras.
La Dra. Ilia Leitch, del Real Jardín Botánico de Kew, afirma que es asombroso que una planta pequeña tenga tanto ADN. El helecho, Tmesipteris oblanceolate, vivió antes de los dinosaurios y crece en los árboles de las selvas tropicales. Los científicos descubrieron que el tamaño de su genoma es de 160.000 millones de pares de bases mediante un colorante. Los humanos tenemos unos 3.000 millones de pares de bases. El helecho tiene tres récords mundiales por su gran genoma.
