John, que es profesor asociado de Geografía en la Western Kentucky University, estaba escalando una montaña en Nepal como parte de un proyecto de investigación y cayó en una grieta.
Filmó su lucha en el interior del agujero de 22 metros, diciendo que pensó que iba a morir tras romperse el brazo y cinco costillas, pero consiguió arrastrarse fuera del hueco. Tardó seis horas, utilizando sólo un piolet, y otras tres en llegar a su tienda, donde pasó la noche antes de que los rescatadores llegaran hasta él al día siguiente.
