El lobo rojo, un tipo de lobo único en EEUU, está reapareciendo lentamente gracias a un programa de cría.
El zoo de Point Defiance, en Tacoma, Washington, ayuda cuidando sus dientes. Los dientes rotos pueden dificultar que estos lobos coman adecuadamente. Quedan unos 270 lobos rojos, la mayoría en zoológicos, y sólo 20 en libertad en el este de Carolina del Norte. Los veterinarios del zoo hicieron revisiones dentales a los lobos y les limpiaron los dientes. También les hicieron radiografías y les extrajeron los dientes en mal estado.
Los lobos de los zoos viven más porque se les hacen revisiones periódicas. Los lobos rojos solían vivir en muchos lugares de EEUU, pero les costaba sobrevivir. Los zoólogos intentan protegerlos y reintroducirlos.
