Las invitaciones de la presidenta india, Droupadi Murmu, a una cena de la cumbre del G20, en las que se refirió a sí misma como “presidenta de Bharat”, han desatado especulaciones sobre un posible cambio de nombre para India.
Tradicionalmente, las invitaciones constitucionales indias utilizan el nombre India en inglés y Bharat en hindi. Sin embargo, estas invitaciones en inglés se desviaron de la norma al utilizar Bharat. Esto ha llevado a sugerir que el gobierno podría estar impulsando un cambio de nombre oficial, en consonancia con la ideología nacionalista hindú del gobierno del primer ministro Narendra Modi, que promueve el hindi.
La India se conoce oficialmente como India y Bharat en distintos idiomas, y la Constitución se refiere a “India, que es Bharat” en inglés. Cambiar el nombre de India por Bharat requeriría una enmienda constitucional, que podría debatirse en una próxima sesión especial del Parlamento.
Aunque algunos sostienen que “India” tiene su origen en la dominación colonial británica, los historiadores señalan que ambos nombres tienen raíces antiguas, y que “Bharat” tiene un significado de identidad cultural.
