La menopausia es cuando las mujeres ya no pueden tener hijos. Algunos animales, como las orcas, también experimentan la menopausia. La mayoría de los animales siguen teniendo crías hasta que mueren, pero algunos dejan de tenerlas antes de tiempo. Esto les ocurre a los humanos y a las orcas.
Los científicos se preguntan por qué se produce la menopausia, ya que no ayuda a la supervivencia ni a la reproducción. Una idea es que los humanos viven más, pero las orcas también viven más y también dejan de tener crías. Otra idea es que tener bebés a edades avanzadas puede ser peligroso, pero las investigaciones demuestran que ésta no es la razón principal. La idea más popular es la hipótesis de la abuela. Dice que las mujeres mayores ayudan a sus familias cuidando de sus nietos. Esto ayuda a la familia, y es mejor que tener más hijos.
