El senador Bob Menéndez, de Nueva Jersey, fue acusado de corrupción. Dijo a los periodistas que tenía 480.000 dólares en efectivo en casa para emergencias.
Explicó que estuvo sacando dinero en efectivo para emergencias durante 30 años porque sus autoridades en Cuba le quitaron las propiedades de su familia. Los padres de Menéndez eran de Cuba, pero él nació en Nueva York. Dijo que algunas personas se apresuraron a juzgarle porque es latino y querían que dejara su trabajo.
Los cargos contra él y su esposa se refieren a la utilización de su cargo en el Senado para ayudar al gobierno de Egipto. Los agentes encontraron dinero en efectivo, lingotes de oro y un Mercedes-Benz en su casa, y también acusaron a tres empresarios. Algunos políticos pidieron a Menéndez que dimitiera, pero éste se negó a hacerlo.
