El martes por la noche, el presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, llegó a Belfast para una visita a la isla de Irlanda. Vino a celebrar el 25 aniversario del Acuerdo de Viernes Santo, que contribuyó a poner fin a la violencia en Irlanda del Norte.
Biden es católico irlandés y, durante su viaje de cuatro días, visitó las casas ancestrales de su familia en Louth y Mayo. Muchos presidentes estadounidenses tienen ascendencia irlandesa, incluido el séptimo presidente, Andrew Jackson, cuyos padres eran del condado de Antrim. El presidente irlandés-estadounidense más famoso fue John F. Kennedy, el primer presidente católico de Estados Unidos. Visitó Irlanda en 1963, cuando el país era joven e independiente. Su presidente, Eamon de Valera, era un símbolo del irlandés católico y de la liberación nacional. Barack Obama visitó Irlanda en mayo de 2011 y fue al país de Offaly, de donde procedía su tatarabuelo antes de emigrar a Estados Unidos. Dos años después, Obama visitó Belfast, donde fue muy popular entre los lugareños.
