Hace mucho tiempo, en el siglo VI, la gente huyó de una guerra. Se fueron a vivir a un lugar húmedo y fangoso junto al mar. Esto ocurrió en el norte de Italia. Ese lugar se convirtió en Venecia.

La gente tuvo que construir casas sobre el barro. Clavaron muchos palos grandes de madera en el suelo. En el barro no hay aire. ¡La madera sigue siendo resistente hoy en día, incluso después de 1500 años! En el pasado, Venecia no tenía tierra para cultivar alimentos. Así que la gente compraba y vendía cosas. Usaban barcos para comerciar con otros países con productos como especias, seda y cristal precioso. Venecia se hizo muy rica.

Hoy en día, Venecia es famosa en todo el mundo. Millones de turistas visitan la ciudad. Pero ahora Venecia tiene demasiada agua. Las calles se inundan muchas veces al año. Además, los turistas dañan los palos de madera.
