Brasil utiliza la ciencia para detener la extracción ilegal de oro. Los científicos estudian el oro para saber de dónde procede. Utilizan herramientas especiales para encontrar pequeños trozos de otros materiales, como tierra. Muestran de dónde procede el oro.
La extracción ilegal de oro es un gran problema en Brasil. Daña la selva amazónica y trae delincuencia. Casi la mitad del oro de Brasil procede de la minería ilegal. El presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva pone en marcha un programa para detenerla. El programa ayuda a la policía a capturar más oro ilegal este año que el año pasado.
Otros países, como Colombia y Francia, quieren utilizar el nuevo método de Brasil. Brasil dice que ayudará a enseñar a otros cómo averiguar de dónde procede el oro.
