Voluntarios y guardacostas intentaron limpiar el devastador vertido de petróleo del petrolero hundido MT Princess Empress, que ha llegado a las costas de la isla filipina de Mindoro y manchado la mayoría de sus playas.
La gente recoge el petróleo, limpia las rocas y recoge los escombros a lo largo de la costa. Después de limpiar una zona, vuelve a aparecer más petróleo con la marea.
El lunes, las autoridades dijeron que habían encontrado el petrolero y que planeaban desplegar un vehículo autónomo teledirigido para determinar su ubicación exacta. Se cree que el petrolero se encuentra a unos 366 metros bajo el nivel del mar, frente a la provincia de Mindoro Oriental. Transportaba unos 800.000 litros de combustible industrial cuando sufrió problemas de motor el 28 de febrero con mar gruesa.
Los científicos marinos dijeron que unas 36.000 hectáreas de arrecifes de coral, manglares y pastos marinos estaban potencialmente en peligro.
