El multimillonario egipcio Mohamed al-Fayed, conocido por comprar los grandes almacenes Harrods y promover una teoría conspirativa desacreditada sobre la muerte de su hijo y de la princesa Diana, ha fallecido.

Empezó su carrera vendiendo bebidas gaseosas y máquinas de coser, y amasó riqueza en el sector inmobiliario, el transporte marítimo y la construcción en Oriente Medio y Europa. Aunque era propietario de símbolos de establecimientos británicos como Harrods, el Fulham FC y el hotel Ritz de París, siguió siendo un extraño en Gran Bretaña. Disputó con el gobierno británico sobre la ciudadanía y a menudo amenazó con trasladarse a Francia, donde recibió la Legión de Honor.

Al-Fayed se pasó una década intentando demostrar que Diana y su hijo habían sido asesinados en un accidente de coche en 1997, lanzando acusaciones infundadas contra la familia real británica. Murió un día antes del 26 aniversario de sus muertes.
