El 6 de mayo, en una gran ceremonia, Carlos fue coronado rey del Reino Unido y de otros 14 países. Carlos tiene 74 años y sucedió a su madre, la reina Isabel, fallecida el pasado septiembre.
El arzobispo de Canterbury, líder espiritual de la Iglesia Anglicana, le puso en la cabeza la corona de San Eduardo, de 360 años de antigüedad. Camilla, la segunda esposa de Carlos, fue coronada reina. Siguió una procesión militar y salvas de artillería, y el rey y la reina saludaron a la gente desde el balcón del palacio de Buckingham.
Millones de personas pudieron ver la ceremonia por televisión. La monarquía quiere presentarse como una institución moderna y diversa. Sus partidarios dicen que es importante en la diplomacia, pero otros se preguntan si es realmente necesaria hoy en día y cuánto cuesta.
