Japón tiene una nueva isla de unos 100 metros de ancho. Una erupción volcánica submarina cerca de la isla de Iwoto, en la cadena de islas de Ogasawara, creó la isla.
La erupción comenzó en octubre y provocó eventos explosivos conocidos como erupciones freatomagmáticas. Estas erupciones se producen cuando el magma interactúa con el agua. Un experto confirmó la existencia de la diminuta isla porque vio humo y ceniza durante su sobrevuelo.
En 2021 se produjeron erupciones similares en la región. No está claro qué ocurrirá con la isla; puede crecer o desaparecer. Depende de cuántas erupciones más se produzcan. A veces ocurre que aparecen nuevas islas pero se erosionan.
